Envent attends the CTAC Committee meeting in Washington DC on May 7 & 8. The end result of this meeting was the attached Policy Letter from the United States Coast Guard on the Safe Operation of Mobile Vapor Control Systems. The USCG provided the attached Policy Letter clarifying that CFR 154 safety equipment, shutdowns and controls requirements will not be replaced by a man standing nearby ready to push the mushroom as some competitors seem to have been hawking. Customers now have the piece of mind and clear guidance that the USCG wants things done safely. Envent will provide that safety system in our prepacked Envent EMECS and Envent Dock Safety Unit (DSU). Policy Letter – Click Here to Open

According to Envent HES Director Brian Miller, “this was an exciting week for me, being handed the Gold Star Safety Excellence Award from Chevron El Segundo on Tuesday by the El Segundo Plant Manager, then driving up to the Western HQ for Chevron Pipe Line the next day to receive the 2012 Outstanding Crew Award from the CPL Western Unit Business Manager”. What a great week for Envent and nicely done! On top of that Envent was awarded the Contractor Health, Environment & Safety Leadership Commitment Award!

The 2012 Chevron Refining Award was given to Envent after another stellar safety and operational year and it is always nice to be recognized for our efforts. Envent was selected from 350 CPL contractors. Envent crews underwent 12 separate customer HES audits during multiple jobs that were part of an emergency response. In each audit, Envent employees nailed it. What a great achievement and for Envent, the credit lies with the employees who buy in to our commitment to safety and compliance.

This is the 4th year in a row that Envent Corporation has received Health, Safety & Environmental Excellence Awards from Chevron!

Alert Response by Envent Personnel Provides for Rapid Emergency Response and No Injuries.

Long Beach, CA – March 6, 2013 - Envent has the finest trained personnel in the industry. Like a pilot on an airplane, they are trained to follow the routine and be very prepared for a problem. When that problem arose on a job last month where a piece of equipment operated by the plant began to leak, our operators took swift action, shutting the unit down, notifying the plant personnel and evacuating. We reward such actions but they are expected of our highly trained operators. Envent is in it’s 8th year with a 0.0 TRIR and EMR of 0.64. We have continue to remain the #1 Industry Leader in Tank Degassing, Vapor Control and Mobile Water Treatment Services.

The 3 Most Common Areas of Concern your Provider Should Address before You Sign on the Dotted Line

We at Envent have been in the business of mobile vapor and water treatment for over 20 years. We are fully aware that degassing jobs at refineries and petrochemical plants, two of the most technically sophisticated places on the planet, require a zero tolerance policy for mistakes. It’s the way it should be, and there is no substitute for just plain doing things “the right way.” Degassing and vapor control is too important to be left in the hands of an inexperienced operator, so we thought we would let you in on the three most common concerns we address from our customers so you can ensure that you, too, are in more than capable hands when you decide on who to hire for the job.

Safety

Safety is of course the leader in concern areas when choosing a degassing operator. Clearly there is a most obvious emphasis on workplace safety within an environment that has the ever present hazards pertaining to the aforementioned job site locations. One doesn’t need to wear a hard hat as a professional compulsory to understand the importance. A total commitment to health, safety and environmental protection is a major expectation of customers. Look for an operating company that has an ISNetworld ‘A’ rating in safety performance and minimal TRIR (Total Recordable Incidents Reported) and EMRs (Experience Modification Rate). Do your research!

Regulatory Compliance

As “multiservice” vendors expand their product lines with tank cleaning and vacuum trucks, companies must closely inspect a potential vendor’s compliance records and level of experience. Each State has its own Air Quality Management District that protects the health and safety of that particular State’s residents. If a degassing vendor fails to adhere to the district’s law, in full compliance to the letter, the district will immediately issue a Notice of Violation (NOV). NOVs are more than just an inconvenience or a slap on the wrist and can, in fact, act as a catalyst to bad publicity, ill will from the community, fines and penalties levied against BOTH the company in question and the offending operating vendor. Choose carefully!

Cost

It isn’t any big secret that a company that doesn’t offer its services at a competitive rate won’t get the job or even be around much longer to offer their services at any rate at all. However, you should always be cognizant of the “multiservice” or “jack of all trades” venders who cut costs by cutting corners. Trusted, reliable operators can provide superior quality at competitive price points due to their reputation and longevity in the industry with proven results. Cost is important, but don’t be fooled by inexperienced operators masquerading as experienced industry professionals tying to earn a quick buck by taking on one of the most dangerous jobs in refinery. Inexpensive doesn’t necessarily mean cheap!

As professionals in the industry, we are all aware of the science behind those ‘no cell phone’ warning signs stationed so predominately, almost like guarding sentinels, at filling stations across the country. We know that the very clear and well positioned regulatory dictates are not just the product derived from an overzealous gas attendant’s aversion to our technology obsessed society but are actually a warning to those not privy to the rules of static electricity and flammable vapors that their most beloved and coveted mobile device could be the catalyst to igniting said vapors and act as an enabler to extremely hazardous conditions. This everyday occurrence of being reminded to not use our mobile devices while filling our gas tanks is definitely worth remembering if you are using vacuum trucks to control vapors when tank degassing at factories and other large facilities. The technique of grounding and bonding during a degassing operation is a practice that can safely control the accumulated static charges and prevent workplace accidents. We at Envent Corporation keep a strict adherence to workplace safety and employ preemptive tactics to avoiding hazardous situations when grounding and bonding. We have included a few of our approaches for your reference.

Voltage Levels

Even a seemingly simple degassing operation can create enough static electricity to produce an effect that could prove to potentially ensure your day goes up in flames (yes, that pun was intended). Under certain conditions, even seemingly low flow rates can create startlingly high levels of voltage. Using a device commonly known as a fluke meter to measure voltage, current, and resistance will ensure you are aware of the voltage level you are working with. We all know things aren’t always as they seem. Always use a fluke meter.

Electrical Charges

Often times, one’s own negligent operation methods can contribute to the already ever present threat of static charges. There are unsafe techniques such as “splash filling” during tank unloadings that act as a powerful agent to a possible ignition of liquids or vapors. Implementing best degassing operations and knowing how electrical charges can accumulate is an important step to ensuring safety throughout the degassing process. Always be cognizant.

Personal Culpability

Before any part of the degassing process commences, a professional adhering to best practice methods will always “walk the line” to personally confirm every pipe, connection, clamp and cam lock. There is no substitute for conviction in your work. Confirming the integrity of every connection and verifying that electrical charges will be safely dissipated into a grounded connection are practices used by the best degassing companies that also require their operators to record all of their findings in a degassing log that is provided to the client after every job. Remember Johnny Cash. Always Walk the line.

Business Review Commends Event’s Dedication to Education of Workplace Safety with Article Featured in BIC Magazine Providing Readers with steps to take to Ensure Safe Degassing Operations

Business Review announced today Brian Miller, Envent Corporation’s Director of Health, Safety and Environment, will represent the company’s dedication to workplace safety in BIC Magazine, North America’s largest free, multi-industry, multi-departmental energy publication, with a guest article featuring the most important steps to take to ensure safe degassing operations when grounding and bonding. The article will be available to over 120,000 subscribers in the petrochemical, refining, construction, power generation and pulp and paper industries on March 1, 2013 via the online Magazine’s website, www.BicAlliance.com.

The guest article titled, Grounding & Bonding: Important Steps to Ensure Safe Degassing Operations, will be featured as a safety guide for workers employed in the specialized world of tank degassing where vacuum trucks are used to control vapors and liquids at refineries and other facilities. Envent Corporation sets to educate readers in precautionary measures pertaining to the safest practices in avoiding workplace accidents, hazards or injuries. “All of us have seen signs at filling stations warning us not to use a cell phone while filling our tanks,” Mr. Miller states, as an everyday example of grounding and bonding. “There’s a simple reason behind the regulation. As liquids or vapors pass through pipes or hoses, they generate static electricity and a static discharge can easily ignite flammable vapors in the area. This is why, as specialists in this area, it is important for us to provide the safest industry techniques to practitioners to ensure workplace safety. This simple, everyday example could help save a life.”

Through the article, Envent Corporation will provide BIC Magazine subscribers with three key areas to always be cognizant of while practising safe degassing operations when grounding and bonding. They consist of, voltage conditions, safe and unsafe techniques and personal culpability but will also touch on other areas of focus as well. The article will be available immediately for viewing in E-Magazine format March 1st, 2013 with no need to download.

How do you feel about Lance Armstrong “coming clean” on the set of Oprah’s television show? Here’s my take on it: I hope they throw the book at him. It doesn’t matter whether you ride a bike…or operate a thermal oxidizer for a degassing job at a petrochemical facility. If you cheat, and if you try to get away with it, you deserve to be punished to the full extent of the law. Lance has the luxury of attempting to say “I’m sorry” and hoping the whole thing will blow over.

In the degassing industry, we operate under a different set of rules. If you do something shady, there’s a good chance that someone will be hurt, or property will be damaged, or reputations will be harmed. Envent Corporation prides itself on ALWAYS doing things the right way – and our people know if they try to cut corners, they will lose their job on the spot. There’s only one way to do things, and we are determined to play by the rules. When our clients hire us to do a job, they know they are getting more than the best. They know they are getting HONEST professionals to handle their work!

Be safe out there. – Bill Lloyd

Welcome to the latest, greatest addition to the Envent fleet of industry-leading equipment: the EMECS 42 Marine Vapor Control System, better known as the MVCS.

Envent designs and builds its equipment to set new standards for the industry, and the MVCS is no exception. Our MVCS mobile system is the first in the nation to be certified by the United States Coast Guard for gasoline loading. (It fully complies with all sections of 33 CFR 154 Subpart E.)

Here’s the lowdown on our MVCS. The machine can support a transfer rate of 4,000 barrels per hour, and its redundant safety systems are prepared to handle a wide range of “unexpected” occurrences, including barge overflow alarms, enrichment system, oxygen analyzers, pressure monitoring, and relief valves. The system includes an interlock that shuts down the loading pumps in the event of any unexpected condition at the MVCS or the vessel.

Envent’s attention to details helps explain why we own the best safety record in the industry. Here’s a quick snapshot at some of the safety features included in our MVCS:

- Safety shutdowns options at the EDSU include Low Pressure, High Pressure, Low Differential Pressure, High Temperature at the Detonation Arrestor, High Oxygen (redundant), Oxygen Analyzer Failure, and Vessel High Cargo Level.

- Safety shutdowns on the EMECs include Vapor Blower Failure, Detonation Arrestor High Temperature, Low Supply Gas Pressure, High Supply Gas Pressure, Low Pilot Gas Pressure, Combustion Air Failure, Pilot Failure, High Temperature, Low Combustor Temperature, and Low Differential Pressure.

And here’s how it works. The EMECs pull vapors as the loading occurs. These vapors travel through the EDSU where an oxygen sensor analyzes the level of oxygen in the vapor stream. The sensor sends a signal to a modulating valve that precisely matches enrichment levels to oxygen levels. The process is called “enriching the vapors” – and it’s the secret behind the high-efficiency destruction that occurs in the EMECs.

Welcome to our fleet of exceptional services, MVCS! Call or email Envent for a copy of the USCG Certification Letter.
