Biodegradable Hydrocarbon Scrubbing & Degassing

Our line of hydrocarbon scrubbing chemicals is non-hazardous, biodegradable, and highly effective for VOC abatement. They have been proven to work better and longer than typical sponges or alternative “snake oils.” This higher efficiency equates to safer venting, reduced downtime during refinery turnarounds, and major cost savings for our customers.

Featured case study

The Problem: A Texas plant needed to degas a storage tank containing anhydrous ammonia (NH3). Ammonia is toxic, corrosive, and produces a sharp odor that triggers safety alarms. Because standard carbon filters are ineffective for ammonia, the site required a specialized neutralization method.

What We Did: Envent engineered a multi-stage liquid scrubbing system using an acidic solution to convert ammonia gas into a stable liquid salt. Our field technicians managed a closed-loop line from the tank to the scrubbers, monitoring pH and vapor levels 24/7 to keep output well below safety limits.

The Result: The tank was cleared for safe entry on schedule with 100% odor control. By utilizing chemistry instead of thermal oxidation-which can produce (NO2) when burning ammonia-Envent provided a cost-effective solution that maintained full regulatory compliance.

Liquid Scrubber & Chemical Solutions: Frequently Asked Questions

What is VapoScrub™ technology, and how does it work?

VapoScrub™ refers to our proprietary line of scrubbing chemicals designed to neutralize contaminants through chemical reactions rather than simple physical adsorption. When paired with our VaporBite™ contact technology, these chemicals break down VOCs and H2S into stable, non-hazardous liquid forms.

For applications requiring chemical oxidation (such as VapoScrub™ NaOH), maintaining the correct pH is critical for efficiency. Envent field technicians provide 24/7 monitoring of the scrubbing liquor. We utilize real-time pH adjustment to ensure the chemistry remains at peak neutralization capacity throughout the entire degassing or clearing operation.

Yes. While standard carbon is generally ineffective for ammonia, we utilize specialized acidic VapoScrub™ solutions to convert toxic ammonia gas into stable liquid salts. This method also avoids the production of NOx (nitrogen oxides) which can occur if ammonia is treated via thermal oxidation.
VaporBite™ is the proprietary mechanical design used within our Escrub™ and EVAC units. It maximizes the “contact time” between the hazardous vapor and the scrubbing liquid, ensuring that virtually every molecule of contaminant is neutralized before the air is vented.
Our hydrocarbon scrubbing line is non-hazardous and biodegradable. We prioritize “green” chemistry that remains highly effective for VOC abatement without introducing secondary environmental hazards to your job site.
We assist plant engineers with HAZOP and MSS (Maintenance, Startup, and Shutdown) reviews. Our technicians provide documented emissions data and monitoring logs, creating a clear technical map that makes regulatory reporting for turnarounds seamless and audit-ready.

For targeted sulfur removal, we typically deploy VapoScrub H2S5 or NaOH. These are specifically engineered to eliminate the “rotten egg” odors of H2S and the pungent scent of mercaptans, ensuring zero public odor complaints.

Absolutely. Our mobile Escrub™ units are commonly deployed upstream of, or in conjunction with, EMTOS thermal oxidizers during tank degassing and vessel cleaning operations. The scrubber system conditions the vapor stream, such as removing hydrogen sulfide or other acid gases, before final vapor destruction. This integrated configuration supports efficient vapor management, facilitates safe-entry preparation for maintenance crews, and maintains compliance with applicable air permit requirements.

Envent field technicians use calibrated monitoring equipment to track vapor levels at the inlet and outlet of the scrubber. We provide detailed data logs that track pH levels, chemical consumption, and destruction efficiency to satisfy EPA and local air quality requirements.
We maintain an “Always Ready” fleet across North America. Our 24-hour emergency hotline (888-997-9465) allows us to mobilize trailer-mounted scrubbers and VapoScrub™ chemistry within hours to mitigate leaks, spills, or unexpected odor excursions.
